My next project will be creating playing cards using images from a vintage German "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland". FYI, I love Alice and have over 300 copies of Alice in Wonderland and Through the Looking Glass.
Johnston Candy Company was making candy in Milwaukee in the early 20th century. From what I can find out they announced the construction of their factory in 1918. They were still in business in 1931 when an autographed photo of Rudy Valle was included in each box of Valentine Chocolates.
This set of Old Maid playing cards has 12 pairs of different candies plus the Old Maid (who is Not a candy) The cards are only 2 1/2" x 1 5/8". I assume these cards were a premium given away in a box of chocolates.
